Can a Mindset Shift Get You Out of Debt?

Mindset Shift

There are so many books, podcasts, and social media channels about thinking your way to wealth, but it isn’t that simple. If it were, everyone with a vivid enough imagination would be financially secure. As it stands, the only people getting rich from the “think yourself rich” industry are the authors of the books and the creators of the content. The rest of us have as much debt as we did when we started reading, listening, or clicking. We might have been able to avoid a few impulse purchases by listening to a free audiobook during time that we might otherwise have spent shopping online, but besides that, we have derived no financial benefit from the endeavor. If we pay for content that promises to make us rich, it only makes our debt balances bigger. Simply changing your thinking will not change your bank account balances, but the thought processes that go into addressing your debt problems can change your financial behaviors in the long term. Whether the result is a bankruptcy filing or simply a thought experiment that gives you clarity, it cannot hurt to contact a Plantation chapter 7 bankruptcy lawyer.

Try Telling Your Creditors That Debt Is All a Matter of Perception

An entire genre of content will tell you that you are only as rich or as poor as you feel. Another genre tells you that if you act with the same reckless abandon with which rich people act, the wealth will follow, especially if you do it in front of an audience. Your inward attitude or your performance thereof will not convince your creditors that you do not owe them money. The law determines the rules about debt collection practices, as do legally binding agreements concluded between two individuals, two businesses, or an individual and a business.

Debt Freedom Through Serene Thinking, or Through Bankruptcy Court

Filing for chapter 7 bankruptcy can make your debts go away quickly. It also gives the court the right to sell your property. Of course, the bankruptcy court will not leave you destitute; it only liquidates non-exempt assets, the ones that it determines that you don’t need but merely enjoy. If you are thinking about filing for bankruptcy, imagine the things that the court would liquidate if you filed your petition for bankruptcy protection. Would you be willing to part with those things? If yes, you might be able to avoid bankruptcy by selling them or, if they are encumbered by loans, by surrendering them to the creditors. If you do this, you could achieve the simpler lifestyle that bankruptcy forces you to adopt, except without the long-lasting negative mark you get on your credit report when you file for bankruptcy.

Work With a Debt Lawyer About the Bankruptcy Thought Experiment

A South Florida debt lawyer can help you envision the financial changes that a bankruptcy filing would bring, and perhaps enact some of them without even filing for bankruptcy.  Contact Nowack & Olson, PLLC in Plantation, Florida to discuss your case.
