The Painfully High Price of Car Ownership

Car Bankruptcy

If you are looking for a topic of conversation, choose something, anything, and then complain about how much more expensive it has become in recent memory. Your interlocutors are sure to be able to relate. Grumbling about the price of groceries is getting old, though. If you can remember when a dozen eggs was an affordable purchase or when a rotisserie chicken from the supermarket cost five dollars, it only proves that you are no spring chicken. Housing is expensive, too, but the housing situation is almost too much of a bummer to think about. The days of affordable mortgage interest rates back in 2021 are still within recent memory, but even those people who were able to catch lightning in a bottle and buy a house or condo in 2021 are feeling the pinch. The ones who missed the opportunity for homeownership when it was affordable are truly struggling, to the point where it doesn’t even make sense to complain about being rent-burdened unless housing costs take up half of your paycheck. Car expenses are still a safe topic, though. You can complain about how much you pay for your car until you feel a human connection with your fellow complainer and then get into your car and drive to work. If vehicular expenses are a major contributor to your financial stress, contact a Boca Raton debt lawyer.

If the Auto Loan Payment Doesn’t Get You, the Costs of Gas and Maintenance Will

Car loan payments have become burdensome, as the cost of everything else has also crept up. Today, car loans with seven-year repayment terms are so common that no one is surprised to see them, and the interest and fees are so high that even stretching out the repayment term for seven years does not always amount to a comfortably low monthly payment.

That is not the only reason that vehicle ownership has become so much more expensive this year. Because no one can afford to trade in their old cars for new ones, people keep driving their clunkers, which means that they must pay more to fix them. Even worse, gas prices have hovered around four dollars per gallon for much of 2026, which is considerably more expensive than gasoline has been in recent years.

Not Owning a Car Is Not a Ticket to Financial Freedom, Either

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could just forgo car ownership and walk or take public transportation to the places you needed to go? Unfortunately, that is not a feasible option in South Florida. Even if you do not mind walking outside in the heat for long distances, there are few destinations you can reach without crossing busy roads or walking alongside the interstate highway. Without a car, you must constantly pay for rideshare rides, which is not cheap, either.
