Would You Open a Bank Account With a Friend?

OpeningAccount

In an age of unrelenting financial woes, when content creators are out of ideas, kids are entertained by AI-generated brain rot memes, and adults keep clicking on a feedback loop of content about how bots are taking all our jobs, a wondrous thing has happened. After decades, perhaps centuries, of increasing alienation, people are finally starting to realize that friendship rules. When we had the means and the energy to engage in such behaviors, we used to spend money keeping up with the Joneses, or at least posting pictures and captions on social media where we pretended to be perfect, and all of this was at the expense of the best parts of friendship, such as trust and sincerity. Now we are too broke and too exhausted to pretend, so we call our friends, or at least text them in full sentences, and tell them that the real reason we can’t go to brunch is because we have no money. Before we know it, we are engaging in real talk, the kinds of things that people who can afford therapy say to their therapists. Multi-level marketing recruiters, back when anyone took them seriously, used to encourage us to try to make money off of our friends by persuading them to buy and sell allegedly miraculous nutritional supplements that our friends are allegedly gullible enough to agree to buy and sell. Perhaps there are other ways our friends can assuage our financial distress, ones that don’t involve a garage full of overpriced vitamin supplements. If you and your buddies are ready to join forces to get out of debt, contact a Boca Raton debt lawyer.

Why Are Millennial Golden Girls Merging Their Finances?

Friends can enrich your life in so many ways, and some besties are banking on this. Single women are buying houses jointly with one or more lifelong friends, a phenomenon that the retirement planning industry calls “Millennial Golden Girls.” Some people are even co-parenting with platonic friends who have never been anything but that, but you can only do this if you have enough money to pay for fertility treatments and the costs of raising the resulting baby.

If you trust your friends deeply but don’t want the commitment that comes with co-parenting or joint homeownership, there is a lower stakes option that is gaining popularity. Friends are opening joint bank accounts. In most cases, each participant also has his or her own separate bank account. The joint account is like a business account, except for a friendship instead of a business. The money that the friends deposit in it goes to the pursuit of financial goals that the friends have disclosed to each other, such as paying down certain debts owed by each friend or saving up for a trip or other large purchase that the friends can enjoy together. It is a new frontier in having a financial accountability buddy.
