BNPL Debt Is for Salaried Employees, Too

_BNPL

For years, the media has been saying that families with a household income of more than $100,000 per year cannot make ends meet, but the feeling of not making ends meet approaches gradually. At first, you looked at your income tax return and smiled in a self-satisfied manner. Your income is not very far into the triple digits, but in those days, at least, you were living within your means. Not much money was left after necessities, and you spent all of the time that was not devoted to your salary job on activities that distinctly were not leisure, such as errands, gigs, and household tasks meant to streamline your schedule of constant work. At first, you managed to keep your financial distress from spiraling out of control. Toward the end of each pay period, you would charge a few grocery runs or tanks of gasoline on your credit card, but you would pay it down each month to where it had been the previous billing cycle. Your credit card balance was not getting lower, but it also was not getting higher. Then things got worse, and you started making only the minimum payments on your credit card until it was maxed out. Now you are in the same boat as people who, if they saw your income and credit history, would consider your financial situation aspirational, and like those who are used to needing more money than employers will pay them and more than banks will lend them, you have started making purchases on buy now pay later (BNPL) plans. If BNPL debt is putting a strain on your budget even though you are gainfully employed, contact a Boca Raton debt lawyer.

New Trends in BNPL Borrowing Reveal a Problem With No Easy Solution

A recent article on the CNBC Your Money website highlights trends in consumer behavior that show that consumers are using BNPL payment plans for purposes that extend far beyond the original stated goals of BNPL lenders. When BNPL companies first entered the U.S. market around the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, their ostensible purpose was to help people with insufficient credit history pay for purchases that the credit card set pays for with credit cards.

More than two out of five American adults of working age plan to make a BNPL purchase in the next year. Of the people who have used BNPL in the past year, nearly one third have paid for a grocery haul with BNPL. One reason for the increase in BNPL users and the decrease in the fun factor of their purchases is that BNPL is a measure of last resort. In addition to the original BNPL audience, credit card holders have also started using BNPL after they maxed out their credit cards because of a financial emergency.
