About Those Overpriced Credit Checks

CreditCheck

We are all familiar with the ways that people who rely on employment income get nickel and dimed in virtually every aspect of life. It is almost impossible to open a bank account if you have never had one; until you can produce a dozen different documents attesting to your financial stability, you are stuck getting your paycheck deposited to a debit card that charges exorbitant fees. If you are lucky enough to have a checking account, it charges you for every overdraft. You shop at overpriced grocery stores except for the rare instances where you can afford a rideshare ride to the bougie supermarkets in the far suburbs, where everything costs less, even though the clientele has more money. When you finally scramble your way to a financial position where you can apply for a home mortgage loan, you must jump through numerous other hoops, and it comes as a surprise to no one in the 99 percent that you must jump through those hoops at your own expense. In fact, home buying has become so expensive that mortgage lenders are asking lawmakers to impose measures that would make the process less expensive for borrowers. If you are cautiously optimistic about applying for a home mortgage loan, but also painfully aware of how high prices keep you in a precarious financial situation, contact a Boca Raton debt lawyer.

Could a Tri-Merge Credit Check Make Homeownership More Accessible?

It is not just your imagination if you feel like the process of applying for a home mortgage loan is labyrinthine, and it is also not just your imagination that the process has some steps that you must complete more than once. At the beginning of the process, when you seek pre-approval, you must request a credit report. Actually, you must request three credit reports, one each from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. Before closing, the lender asks for those credit checks again, to make sure that, during the process of agreeing to purchase the house, you have not wrecked your credit by losing your job or maxing out your credit cards. This means that, to buy a house, you must pay for six credit reports. You don’t pay for them until closing, but they drive up the already expensive closing costs.

With housing affordability at crisis levels, mortgage lenders are starting to worry that paying hundreds of dollars for credit checks is making borrowers hesitant to apply for mortgages. Therefore, the Mortgage Bankers Association has asked the Federal Housing Finance Authority to introduce a tri-merge credit check, whereby loan applicants could get credit reports from all three credit reporting bureaus for the price of one. When you are scrambling to come up with the money for closing costs, every penny counts.
