Which Debts Can You Let Pile Up?

DebtBills

The old generation makes it sound like it is so easy to stay afloat financially and keep your debts under control. Skip your morning Starbucks run, they said, as if you had ever indulged in a daily breakfast at a chain coffee shop. Monetize your hobby to supplement the income you get from your full-time job, they said, even though our full-time job and our hobby is searching for a full-time job to supplement the income from the part-time jobs we have been able to piece together; hobbies are for retired people, which, if this keeps up, we will never be. In desperate financial circumstances like ours, our only hope is to continue juggling our debts until some kind of relief arrives, until our income increases or some generous benefactor bails us out financially. The fact remains, though, that your expenses, even if you only consider minimum payments and do not try to make a dent in the principal balance of your debts, exceed your income, at least for this period. Which expenses can you put off paying? If you have been stuck in the cycle of kicking some of your bills down the road every pay period for multiple months, it is probably time to contact a Boca Raton debt lawyer.

Don’t Erode the Four Walls of Your Budget

Dividing your expenses into needs and wants is a thought experiment for second graders, or else it is for people who are wealthy enough to have the luxury of thinking about what they buy before they buy it. Most of us spend our money trying to buy time from the creditors that shout the loudest. When bill collectors threaten you with collection agencies, lawsuits, and wage garnishments, it is easier to pay now and decide later where your next meal will come from. You should not, however, neglect the “four walls” of your budget, namely housing, utilities, food, and transportation. If you have to skip payments on something, do it with your credit card bill or BNPL debt, not your rent or your utilities, or else you will be out on the street. You can be resourceful with food or transportation; you can walk to work if your workplace is nearby, or ask a neighbor for a ride. You can get groceries or meals through zero waste apps or pool your food stamps with your friends.

If Not Quick Fix Solutions, Then What?

All of this gets exhausting, though. Juggling your debts is easier when you didn’t also do it the month and the month before. Eventually, it feels like Tetris blocks piling up toward the top of the screen. You can’t do this, forever, so perhaps you should meet with a debt relief lawyer to discuss debt consolidation, debt settlement, or filing for bankruptcy protection.
